DIY: Painted Jewelry Tray

/ Friday, January 6, 2012 /

Now that the holidays are over and done with (cue melodic sigh of relief), you’re probably left with a bunch of leftover cookie trays. But since baked goodies are the furthest things from our minds at the moment, the poor dishes are bound to collect dust…until now! With metallic spray paint and painter’s tape, you can turn your standard trays into artsy jewelry organizers. Do we spy an excuse to get creative and organized? Yes, because who says New Year resolutions break within the first week of making them?

What to do:
  1. Grab a plain plastic tray from the cupboard (if you don’t have one, you can find one at the thrift store or your local market). TIP: Use solid colored trays so that your patterns are more visible.
  2. Create linear patterns using the blue painter’s tape. Make sure the tape is smooth and completely flat—if there are bubbles, the paint can seep underneath! (If you have a preferred stencil shape, you can use that too!)
  3. Take your metallic paint (or if color’s more your thing, any bright hue will do) and spray it over the entire tray.  The areas covered by the tape will create your desired pattern!
  4. Let the paint dry before pulling off the tape and placing your jewelry on the tray!

And voila! It’s a piece vibrant enough to house even your most precious gems!
